A fractional CMO costs anywhere from about $4,000 to $45,000 a month in 2026, and the ranges published for Series A companies sit around $7,000 to $18,000. What moves the price most is whether the CMO only leads, or leads and also does the work. We publish ours: $8,750 a month for leadership, and $12,250 when we also do the work.
We've been on both sides of this price. We've paid agencies for ads and for brand, and we've been the fractional CMO ourselves, so we know what each kind of price does and doesn't buy.
Fractional CMO cost, in numbers
- $4,000 to $20,000 a month: Go Fractional's published retainer range (August 2026). Its CMOs average about 20 hours a week.
- $8,000 to $25,000 a month: Treetop's range for B2B mid-market engagements (June 2026).
- $20,000 to $45,000 a month: Chameleon Collective's range.
- $150,000 to $200,000: base pay for a startup head of marketing, per recruiter Talentfoot (November 2026).
- 30%: the share of total pay that goes to benefits in US private industry (BLS, June 2026).
- 27 months: the average tenure of a software company's CMO (Findem and CMO Huddles, September 2026).

What drives the price?
- Hours. Most firms sell hours by the month, often 10 to 20 a week at Series A.
- Lead only, or lead and do. A CMO who sets the plan and runs the meetings costs less. One who also writes, designs, builds and runs the ads costs more, and replaces the agency you'd otherwise hire next.
- Ad management. Ask whether the fee includes running your ads, and keep the ad spend itself out of it.
- Specialists. Ask whether video crews, photographers and PR firms are extra.
- Term. Minimums run from month to month up to six months.
Lead only vs lead and do: what's the real difference?
| Lead only | Lead and do the work | |
|---|---|---|
| Strategy, budget, targets | Yes | Yes |
| Board reporting | Yes | Yes |
| Brand, website, CRM | You hire it out | Included |
| Content, email, campaigns | You hire it out | Included |
| Who you still need to hire | An agency, a designer, a marketer | Specialists only (video, photo, PR) |
| Our price | $8,750 a month | $12,250 a month |
This is the part most quotes leave out. A lead-only CMO hands you a plan, and then you go hire the people to carry it out. Count the people you'd still need before you compare two numbers.
What does a full-time head of marketing really cost?
Start with pay. Executive recruiter Talentfoot puts a startup head of marketing at $150,000 to $200,000 in base pay, and two live 2026 job posts we read list $220,000 to $350,000, one of them plus equity. Benefits add about 30% of total pay, so a $200,000 base costs roughly $286,000 a year before the first tool or vendor.
Then add the time. First Round puts the first marketing hire at three to six months, and the seat turns over: the median CMO lasts 36 months, and software companies average 27.
That's why so many founders hold back the equity. You want someone senior to set the strategy, but you'd rather not give away a slice of the company before they've proven it. A fractional team gets paid in cash, which leaves the equity for the leader you hire once you know exactly what the job is.
What do we charge?
| Program | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Leadership | $8,750 a month | Plan, budget and board reporting. Calls every two weeks, a monthly CEO session. |
| Growth Program | $12,250 a month | Leadership, plus strategy, brand, website, CRM, content, email and campaigns. Most companies start here. |
| Full Stack | $15,250 a month | The Growth Program, plus managed ad spend up to $20K. |
| Marketing plan and brand strategy | $6,250, once | Delivered in 45 days. Yours whether or not we run it. |
| CRM setup and consulting | From $4,750 | Setup, automation and reporting in HubSpot. |
| Consulting | $250 an hour | Sold in 5-hour blocks ($1,250). |
- A year of Leadership is $105,000; a year of the Growth Program is $147,000.
- Ad spend is never in a price. You pay the platforms and approve every budget. Ad management is $3,000 a month for up to $20,000 in spend, then 15% of spend, sliding down to 3.5% above $2.5 million a month.
- Term: two months, then month to month with 30 days' notice. Your accounts, data and playbooks stay yours, so nothing is held hostage if you leave.
- Paid in cash. We don't take equity.
- Who does the work: Katherine and I. We bring in photographers, video crews and PR firms when the work calls for them, paid by you and approved by you first.
- Day to day: we work in your Slack and inside your accounts, with a written update between calls. Across the marketing we run, the average return is 4.3x.
Is a fractional CMO worth it?
It is when you need senior judgment now and can't yet describe the full-time job. One founder told us the goal was to get the most revenue out of every employee. That's where a fractional team fits: senior judgment and the work itself, without adding headcount. Start on a smaller monthly fee and let the contract grow as you hand over more of the work. Then ask what happens when you grow: a good fractional team helps you hire the people who take it over. We've helped clients hire their marketing people, managed their PR and production teams, and led PR ourselves.
It isn't when you already have a team that only needs a leader and you can afford a senior one full-time. Hire that person.
How do you compare fractional CMO quotes?
Ask every firm the same seven questions:
- How many hours a month, and who exactly works them?
- Do you only lead, or lead and do the work?
- What will I still have to hire to get the plan done?
- Is ad management included, and is ad spend kept separate?
- What's the minimum term and the notice period?
- Do you take equity?
- Who owns the accounts, the data and the playbooks if we part ways?
Key takeaways
- Fractional CMOs charge about $4,000 to $45,000 a month; published Series A ranges sit around $7,000 to $18,000.
- The real question is lead-only vs lead-and-do. Count what you'd still have to hire.
- A $200,000 head of marketing costs about $286,000 a year with benefits, before tools, vendors and the months of searching.
- Our prices: $8,750, $12,250 and $15,250 a month, paid in cash, two months to start, then month to month.
FAQs
How much does a fractional CMO cost per hour?
Published hourly rates run about $150 to $450. Ours is $250 an hour, sold in 5-hour blocks.
Should a fractional CMO get equity?
Some firms trade a lower fee for equity. Keep equity for the full-time leader you hire later; we work for cash.
Is ad spend included in a fractional CMO's fee?
It shouldn't be. You pay the ad platforms directly and approve every budget; the fee covers running the campaigns.
What should a fractional CMO deliver in the first month?
A read on where the funnel stands, then the plan, the budget and the targets, with tracking fixed and dashboards built. With us, the brand, the website and the CRM are set up in the first 30 days, the whole growth system is live by day 45, and the first board-ready report follows in month two.
What isn't on your price list?
Company websites, live streams and podcasts, and search audits. We quote those after a first call, at the same hourly rate.
Final thought. A fractional CMO's price only means something next to what it leaves out. Price the whole year, add the people you'd still need, and pick the option that actually gets the work done.
